Diabetes and Candida

What is Diabetes?

This condition is characterized by hyperglycemia which basically means there are high blood sugar levels. Two types of diabetes exist, diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus. Diabetes insipidus is the rarer condition among the two and is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone which usually occurs due to some form of damage.

Diabetes mellitus is the result of insufficient amounts of insulin being produced by the pancreas. The body requires insulin to utilize the intake of glucose. When glucose is not utilized high levels are created in the blood and there are low levels of glucose absorption by the tissues.

There are two main symptoms that pre-dispose a person to candida. One is neutropenia or in other words a decrease in the number of defender white blood cells in the circulation. Hence the immune system is not functioning optimally. This creates increased susceptibility to fungal infections.

The other is diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia. This is caused by an excessive intake of carbohydrates (sugars and starches) in the diet. The relationship between diabetes and candida exists due to the fact that high blood sugar levels support the growth of candida in and on the body tissues.
