Diet and Nutrition

The diet needs to be monitored as the Candida yeast can feed on sugar or simple carbohydrates. Probiotics are an important inclusion into the diet as they add good bacteria into the gut.

Dietary recommendations:

  • Ground flax meal is an important addition to your diet as it promotes digestive regularity.

  • Saturated fats such as organic extra virgin coconut oil have antimicrobial properties.

  • An increase in your intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids is also beneficial. Sources of this include salmon, fish oil, avocados and sprouted walnuts.

  • Nutrient- dense and unprocessed foods such as sprouted nuts and seeds should be added to your diet.
  • Eat plain, organic, unpasteurized yogurt with no added sugar at least twice a day. Yogurt contains probiotics which contains good bacteria.

  • One crushed garlic clove can be eaten daily. An alternative to this is a supplement that contains stabilized allicin. The action of crushing the garlic is what releases the allicin. This substance has antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

  • Drinking enough water is important. Purified water is a better option.

Foods to avoid:

  • Simple and refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, cakes etc)

  • Foods that contain refined sugar or synthetic sugar-substitutes such as aspartame. A natural sweetener is best.

  • The functioning of the immune and digestive systems is hampered by an excessive intake of alcohol. This should therefore be avoided.

  • Cheese and wine (fermented foods)

  • An excess intake of caffeine

  • Fungi such as mushrooms

  • Carbonated soft drinks that alter the blood pH levels

  • Fruits and fruit juices

  • Pickled foods

  • Avoid eating bottom crawlers such as oysters, clams and lobster as they may contain toxic levels of mercury. Deep sea fish such as tuna, mackerel and swordfish may also contain toxic levels of mercury.

  • Yeast and wheat products that contain gluten.

  • Processed foods that especially contain sodium nitrite.

  • MSG (Monosodium glutamate), found in many foods as a flavor enhancer

  • Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils found in many processed foods, deep fried foods, fast food and junk food.
